ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE’S NETWORK IN FAVOUR OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY’S RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION

The members of the Gernika Network for self-determination want to denounce publicly the criminalization of Bildu, the electoral coalition formed by Eusko Alkartasuna, Alternatiba and independent candidates.

We understand that the banning of Bildu is an Frontal-attack on citizens’ fundamental rights and free choice to vote, (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Art. 25),  we also believe that the institutions resulting from these elections should not be considered representative of popular will.

The Gernika network has always considered undemocratic the banning of political parties but given the current context of ETA’s permanent, general and verifiable ceasefire, the unequivocal rejection of violence by Bildu and the opinion of Basque society’s majority against the outlawing, the outlawing is not compatible with European democratic standards. The Gernika network wants to express its full support on Bildu claims for recognition and demand the Spanish Government to discard its repressive attitude and take steps to resolve the conflict in compliance with a peaceful and democratic approach.
